This was a Triumph!

March 10th, 2008

*Obligatory Portal quote*

What a fantastic day, Pompey beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup 6th Round (Why do they call it the 6th round instead of Quarter Finals?).

And not to mention, we are the only Premier League team left in the world oldest cup competition.
I’m allready planning a trip to Wembley with friends and family, even if it means ‘calling in sick’. I cannot wait to see the new stadium in all its glory and hopefully also see Portsmouth progress to the Final and go on to win it.

Even though the game was played on a Saturday at 12:45, and I start work at 1:00 and finish at 5:45, I managed to go the whole day without anyone spoiling the result for me, though I did have to threaten several people with Grievous Bodily Harm to make sure of it.
I even left work an hour early to get home and watch the match and minimise the risk of being told the result. And I am certainly glad I did as I was on the edge of my seat for the majority of the game.

The draw for the Semi-Finals was today and we drew West Brom, and if we go through we will play either Barnsley or Cardiff in the Final, though to be honest I wouldn’t have minded getting any team in the draw.

I am now Level 37 Priest in Warcraft and have started a load of other characters of the various classes and races. I’m slowly playing more and more WoW each day, the only reason I am blogging right now, is because my internet connection is down and I dropped right in the middle of Gnomeregan.

Anyway, also to do with Gaming is a game I recently discovered is Audiosurf. Which is possibly one of the greatest games ever, a short description would be something like ‘Tetris + Guitar Hero + A slight racing element + LSD = Audiosurf’
Its basically a game that uses your music collection and creates a track out of it, using the beat and rhythm to make each track unique. A very fast and beat heavy song will for example move up and down a lot and have a lot more notes to hit, whereas a slow song will be a mainly uphill and slower track.
Each song will include either (depending on the mode you choose) coloured ‘cars’ (or notes) that you have to hit in 3 lanes, and connect them together in similarly coloured groups of at least 3, the bigger the group the more points.
The other mode is Mono, where instead of all the cars being different colours, most are grey, which are to be avoided, and the rest are one colour which you have to collect into groups.
You can boost your score with various bonuses like not collecting any greys in a track or getting a group of either 7, 11 or 21 blocks.
You can also compare your scores to anyone else who has played the same song as you on either a Global or Local scale.
Also, playing this high is on the best ways to spend/waste time.

Its a game that anyone with more than 5 music tracks should without a doubt buy. Its only $9.95 or about £5 and is available from Audiosurf or on Steam, so there is nothing that should stop anyone from buying this simply terrific game.

Other news: I finally got a surround sound system, I have been wanting one for ages but didn’t know if I would really benefit from it in a small room, but I just decided to go for it and buy one. So I now have my Media PC, 360, PS3 and Sky HD. Films sound much better now and I love the sound of an X-Wing/Tie Fighter flying behind me.
I got Guitar Hero 3 for my Wii and I am loving it, my favourite songs on it are Ruby, Schools Out and Welcome to the Jungle.
I have also pre-ordered No More Heroes for my Wii, but it got delayed by two weeks, and should be out this Friday, after all the great reviews I can’t wait to play it.
I’ll also be ordering House of the Dead 2 & 3, Pro Evo 2008, Sega Bass Fishing and Mario Kart for the Wii. I’ll order Smash Brothers when a date is announced too.

That’s about it for now, I’ll hopefully be back before the FA Cup Semi’s with a review of the aforementioned games. Later.

WoWEeeeeee

February 5th, 2008

The Title is in reference to me new obsession and my new Laptop. World of Warcraft and my EEE PC respectively.

I can see WoW taking up much of my time, and its already starting to feel like it is.
It seems to have filled a void in my life that has been empty ever since Star Wars Galaxies was ruined.

I started a trial on the recommendation from a friend (The same one who introduced me to SWG when it was good) 2 days ago and am already a Level 11 Dwarf Priest. I have allready ordered the full game and cannot wait to have full access.

Nothing much else to say as this was a quick blog at 2:20AM

Powered by Codeine…

January 27th, 2008

This title was very easy to come up with (details herein).
Well, its been a while since my last post and a lot has happened again, but I really can’t be bothered to try to remember it all and put it down here. I really want to post now just so I can get into the habit of often updates again.

So some short updates:

I’m now officially disabled, got a badge and everything. Got some semi-decent pain killers (Co-Codamol (30mg Codeine & 500mg Paracetamol)), but apparently this country only goes from Codeine to Morphine, rather than using Hydrocodone (Vicodin) and Oxycodone in between those, and my doctor won’t give me anything stronger.

England got knocked out of Euro 2008, this thankfully lead to McClownen getting sacked and Fabio Capello getting the job.

I bought a 37″ Toshiba 1080p HDTV and Sky HD. I also updated my Media PC with an HDMI equipped Video card, I downloaded all 6 Star Wars films in 1080p to celebrate it. Got an Asus EEE PC too.

I enjoyed Heroes, I’m enjoying House, CSI, Jericho (Pre-air DVD Screener!), My Name is Earl, Mythbusters, Prison Break, Reaper, Scrubs (If it ever gets finished) and the Simpsons. No doubt I’ll enjoy Lost when its back too.

Super Mario Galaxy is fucking brilliant.

I applied for a newish job, its the same place I work now, but instead of stock control, its on a new Direct Desk that’s just been put in the store. Its just so people can order TV’s, Computers and the like, to pick up or be delivered, while they do their grocery shopping.

Went to see Pompey play Plymouth in the FA Cup yesterday, was a poor start but luckily we went on to win.

Can’t think of much else, if I do, I’ll post here again.

Well lots has happened since my last post; Manhunt 2 was banned by the BBFC, David Beckham won La Liga with Real Madrid in his final season in Spain and Thierry Henry left for Barcelona.

Well I’ll start with the Beckham thing first off. I’m really glad that he finally won the league in Spain, as he is one of footballs true greats, even though certain pundits and fans just like to trash him. It was nearly the perfect send off for Beckham, the only downside being that he went off injured in the final game. How he ever got dropped from the England and Real teams is beyond my comprehension. Some people say that he has no pace and does not worry defences, this may well be true, but it has been true for most of his career. Beckham’s strengths don’t lie in pace or trickery, they are in his undoubted crossing ability, his skill to place a ball anywhere on the pitch from anywhere on the pitch and his set piece ability. I wish him luck with his new club and I hope he is still in future England squads to come.

Staying on football, I was both deeply sad and slightly relieved that Thierry Henry has moved to Barcelona. Relieved because Portsmouth’s defence no longer have to deal with the French maestro, and sad because I will no longer see his unbelievable talent gracing the Premier League again. Unless of course when he leaves Barca he wants to join the ‘best fans in the world’ here in Pompey!
I still remember watching the 5-1 thrashing at Fratton Park and hearing everyone in the ground still singing (minus the Arsenal fans, who were of course close to comatose).
Unbelievably some Arsenal ‘fans’ have been quick to stick the knife in and claim that Henry is past it, and that it was the right time to sell. Henry may have had a poor season, mainly due to injury, but the old adage ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’ is perfect for this occasion.

Now onto Manhunt 2. Why on earth has this game been banned? I can completely understand trying to make sure children do not get hold of this, but that is a job for the rating system, retailers and most of all parents. If parents occasionally looked at what their kids were playing, rather than buying them the latest version of GTA no questions asked. Manhunt 2 should have been given an 18 like any other violent game would have.
And for people to say that video games cause real life violence is complete rubbish, I and many friends have played nearly every violent game to have ever existed, and yet we have never killed anyone nor ever considered it, the same applies to millions of other gamers. Gamers who are fed up of being blamed for parents problems in raising their children. This webcomic by Ctrl+Alt+Del Author Tim Buckley shows perfectly my and many others feelings.
Ctrl+Alt+Del Comic (C) Tim Buckley

Somewhat ironically I now want to kill someone because I won’t be able to play Manhunt 2.

YES! I have been waiting to hear this news ever since the Wii control system was shown off.

Link

Coming from the mouth of George Lucas is as official as it gets. I so cannot wait to play this game.

Next Gaming PC update.

June 3rd, 2007

I’ve once again updated my next gaming PC, the Ram is now 8GBs of GeIL Black Dragon 800Mhz PC2-6400, the case is now an Antec P182, with a Thermaltake ToughPower 1200W PSU.
I also added an Ageia PhysX card, just because I could.
I should be getting it around October-ish.

Woooo

May 29th, 2007

Bank holiday this weekend gives me an extra day off work, a day I will almost certainly use to play Mario Strikers: Charged Football. Its got to be my new favourite game, all the over the top action is great and the controls don’t over use the motion sensing as some other Wii games like to.

I have also updated my next PC again, it now has an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 4 cores running at 2.4Ghz on a Asus P5K Deluxe WiFi and I’ve gone back to a 1000GB Hitachi drive rather than the 750GB drive. Though the rest of the rig remains the same. I’ll change back to an AMD when/if they get around to making a Quad core CPU available.

Lost left me very excited about next season with its last episode of season 3 and I cannot wait until season 4 starts up.

David Beckham was recalled into the England team and not a moment too soon if you asked me. He should never have been dropped. Even if he isn’t the same player he was during his prime, he is still better than Jenas, Parker etc. We all know McClaren only dropped him to differentiate himself from Sven’s era at the helm. If he really wanted to do that he should have dropped players like Dyer, King and Robinson and brought in the likes of Matt Taylor, Sol Campbell and David James.

Fun, Fun, Fun and Fun

May 18th, 2007

My PS3 turned up on Friday and it totally rocks, the graphics are as good as the 360’s maybe even better.
My Xbox 360 also got returned from the repair centre in fully working order and with a free month of Xbox Live Gold! I actually like them now, I never thought I’d ever say that. I may in fact buy one of their OS’s one day.

Motorstorm is already one of my favourite games, everything about the game just screams fun, even crashing in this game is fun.

I haven’t been playing my Wii as much lately, mainly because of the PS3 but also because of the lack of any new games coming out, though that is all changing next week when Mario Strikers comes out and unleashes the Wii’s online capabilities. A Month after that we will have Mario Party 8 coming out too. Then a month after that we have Trauma Centre: Second Opinion, which has been inexplicably out in the Americas and Japan for half a year already. How fucking long does it take to port something from US English to UK English?

I decided to change around the configuration for the PC I’ll be building in November (see my ‘My Rigs’ page’) instead of an nVidia 8800GTX, I’ll be getting two ATi Radeon HD 2900XTs (in Crossfire of course), a smaller Hard Drive (750GB instead of 1TB), an Antec P190 which includes two Antec PSUs for a total of 1200W, instead of an Antec P180 and an OCZ 720W. I also added an Ageia PhysX card, just because I can.
I’ll probably be getting a 24″ Widescreen TFT a couple of months after to really test its limits.

Scrubs, Jericho and CSI came to an end this week, unfortunately Jericho’s end is apparently more permanent because of bad ratings. I really hope it does get picked up by another network as I really like it. Scrubs and CSI left us in cliffhangers which I cannot wait to see. House, Heroes, Lost and 24 will all be finishing in the coming weeks too and I’ll be left with nothing to download and watch in the morning (apart from Mythbusters) for a while.

Next Gen King!!

May 6th, 2007

I finally broke down and decided to order a PS3 yesterday. Though I made a smart choice about it and imported a Japanese one for £309 rather than the £425 European one which wont play as many PS2 games despite being more expensive. The only slight downside is that the Blu Ray player is Region 1/A, but I can get around this by ordering American Blu Ray titles (which I have done with Casino Royale). I also ordered a HDMI cable and a game; Motorstorm. All this for £358, I could get another game and just about make it the same price as an inferior European PS3.

But alas my 360 is not doing so well, it has the dreaded 3 rings of light hardware failure. I thought I was screwed until I phoned Microsoft and they said they would repair/replace it for free!! Even the postage is free! I thought that it was over a year old, but apparently it wasn’t. So for the first time in my life I am actually praising Microsoft’s name.

I’m probably going to be selling some of my shares in Tesco on Tuesday (Damn Bank Holidays), which without a giant leap/fall in share prices well net me a cool £300, pretty much enough to pay off the PS3, or to blow on a shit load of games. I think I’ll go for more game :D . I’m also off work until 23rd May so I will be getting plenty of gaming in until then. Oh and I also have a birthday on the 12th.

I finally managed to get Ubuntu 7.04 reinstalled on my laptop, I had tried a distro called Ultimate Ubuntu, but it ultimately sucked ass and Ubuntu was having trouble formatting it, so I just deleted the partitions in Vista so 7.04 could install. I also installed KDE on it to, so I have Ubuntu and Kubuntu to choose from.

Pompey still have a slight, slight chance of getting into the UEFA cup, I have run through a load of permutations and have found that realistically we need to beat L’Arsenal and hope that Blackburn beat Reading and Villa to beat Bolton, or hope that Tottenham fall apart their last two games of the season.

Lastly, I am really enjoying 24, Lost, Jericho and CSI at the moment, I cannot wait for the final episodes, but also cannot wait for the next season either.
Red Vs Blue deserves a similar mention too.
